Ludwig van Beethoven completed the 9th Symphony in 1824. In those years Beethoven was already old and deaf; the 9th Symphony will be his last composition.
In the fourth and last movement of the Sympony, Beethoven put Friedrich Schiller’s Ode to joy into music.
In 1972 European Union elected the fourth movement of 9th Symphony as her representative anthem.
While the Symphony was being played, most of the european theaters forbade the use of the word “freedom” because it was too connected with French Revolution and his democratic aim; in the German speech was used the word “joy” instead of “freedom”, that sounds similar.

In Shiller’s words and Beethoven’s music there’s a strong dialogic relations between personal delight and cohesion of culture and nations. The strength of authentic friendship and love overpass cultural differences, working in the society as a cell inside a complex organism system, becoming the base of a cohesive society.
